When you’re a solopreneur or small business owner, the last thing you want to worry about is how to organize your business and take care of your clients. After all, those things are what take away from the billable hours you can work to actually make money.

That’s where HoneyBook comes in. 

HoneyBook is an all-in-one software that allows you to work with clients, send pitches, proposals, and invoice, all in one place. Here’s my HoneyBook review so you can decide if this online software will work for you.

What Is HoneyBook?

HoneyBook is a platform made with the solopreneur in mind. It was created to allow solopreneurs and small business owners the opportunity to send proposals, contracts, and invoices all in one place. 

You can use HoneyBook via their website or app, so it’s a great option for business owners that find themselves constantly on the go or traveling. (Helllo laptop lifestyle!)

It also has many other perks that can make it a great all in one solution for those getting started in their entrepreneurship journey.

Honeybook is also a great option for entrepreneurs who are more project-based, like photographers, wedding planners, and even virtual assistants. If you are having to work with multiple clients at once, HoneyBook makes it simple and easy for you to send off multiple contracts, track your time, and invoice with ease. 

Pros of HoneyBook

HoneyBook has many pros and benefits that come along with it.

A few of these include:

  • User-friendly 
  • The ability to send a proposal, invoice, and contract all in one place 
  • The ability to track time or work on a project-based timeline 
  • Customized workflows that allow you to automate emails, tasks, contracts and more
  • Integration options (including, but not limited to: Zapier, QuickBooks, Calendly, and GSuite)

  • A personal concierge that walks you through the system and how to use it to its fullest potential

HoneyBook has quite a few features that can help every entrepreneur cut down on time spent working on admin tasks like proposals and invoices.

When I signed up for HoneyBook to test it out for this review, their customer service team was great! They reached out to me personally a few different times to make sure I was figuring everything out.

If I needed help, they said they could get their team to help with the initial set up. Talk about awesome customer service!

Cons of HoneyBook

Like anything else, where there are pros, there are also cons. Here are a few things to keep in mind before you sign up for HoneyBook. 

  • It’s expensive, and only offers one plan (although you can decide whether to pay monthly or yearly)
  • You have to have separate workspaces when working with multiple clients, or if you need to contact certain people within a company without others seeing your communications 
  • Doesn’t automatically track expenses (unless integrated with QuickBooks) and doesn’t offer any tax payment options

While HoneyBook is a great solution if you’re trying to save time and focus more on client projects, it does have a few downsides.

No HoneyBook review would be complete without talking about the great features that are included when you sign up.

The HoneyBook App 

While you can use HoneyBook on your computer, it also has a beautiful and easy to use app with all of the same features. So, if you find yourself on the go often, or if you need to travel and don’t plan on bringing your computer, you can still handle all projects and clients via your phone. 

It’s User-Friendly 

HoneyBook is easy to use and even includes a walkthrough when you log in for the first time. If you still need help, customer support can assign someone to teach you the ropes until you’re more comfortable with the software. 

Everything Right At Your Fingertips

When you log in to HoneyBook, your dashboard will include all of the most important things you need right at your fingertips. You’ll be able to see everything upfront, including your calendar, tasks due, projects, and clients.

Navigating through the site is easy, and you don’t have to go searching for the tools and tidbits that you need. 

A Built-In Contact Form

If you have a website, you can add a contact form via HoneyBook. No more having multiple apps and websites to manage inquiries. You can just have potential clients fill in the form from HoneyBook directly on your website. From there, HoneyBook can automate the rest if you’ve got it all set up. 

Income & Expenses Tracking 

Although expense tracking isn’t automated in HoneyBook, they do include the option to track expenses and outside income. You can also connect HoneyBook to QuickBooks Online and have a more robust accounting system. 

HoneyBook also includes reports that show you how many bookings you’ve had, which payments have been collected, which payments are outstanding, and even any refunds that you’ve given. 

Documents In One Place

With HoneyBook, you don’t have to worry about losing important documents, contracts, or old proposals. Everything can be stored and filed in one place for you to access at any point in the future should you need them. 

Streamlined Client Communication 

Instead of trying to email, text, call, or other contact methods you may have with multiple clients, you can communicate with them right in HoneyBook. You can view all communications in your dashboard, and don’t have to worry about missing messages or important dates like birthdays or work anniversaries. 

Automated Workflows 

If you find yourself spending a lot of time preparing contracts and invoices, HoneyBook makes it a lot simpler. Honeybook has two main workflows to help you cut out excess admin time, and spend more time making money and growing your business.

The first workflow works with potential clients and will respond to inquiries, automate appointment requests, automate follow-ups, and create a thank you without you having to lift a finger. 

The second workflow works with current clients and will set up to-do lists for your projects, send automatic payment reminders, and even create automated task reminders for you to complete. 

You can also customize your own workflow based on exactly what you need to do to onboard a new client. This can cut down your proposal time significantly. 

Automated Proposals

If a potential client wants to book you for a project or tasks, they can do so easily with HoneyBook. HoneyBook allows you to customize your proposals and has templates for you to use if you need them.

Once a potential client accepts your proposal, they are automatically sent to your contract and first invoice. You don’t have to manually work on this process, which makes everything smoother for you and your client. 

Also, if you need to make any changes or updates, you’re able to do so without any back and forth. And to top it all off, you can customize your proposals with your own designs and photos to make them look professional and on-brand.

HoneyBook Plans & Pricing 

As stated, HoneyBook only has one payment plan and option, although you can pay yearly or monthly. If you choose to pay yearly, you’ll save $72 a year!

Only having one plan could be a drawback for smaller businesses that may not need all the tools and features included in HoneyBook. Or it may also be seen as a pro if you’re prone to information overload. 😉

HoneyBook loves to boast about its customer service, and for good reason. Many users rate their customer experience highly and appreciate all that HoneyBook has to offer.

  • Through The Community: Something different and interesting about HoneyBook is that they offer a community of other users for you to get to know and learn more about. They even have a “creatives” section where you can find people just like you or who are in your area and connect with them. If you have any questions, or if you just want to chat about different workflows, HoneyBook’s community makes it easy. 
  • Live Chat: You can start a conversation with customer service at any time with the live chat feature, and HoneyBook tries to respond as quickly as possible. They do have work hours, which are 6 am – 6 pm PST Monday – Friday, and 8 am – 5 pm on the weekends. 
  • Your personal concierge: Something else that HoneyBook does differently is their customer service when you first sign up. A member of their team will personally reach out to you to see if you need any help, or if you have comments or suggestions to make them better. This concierge can become your go-to should you have any questions about the software. 

Alternatives to HoneyBook

While HoneyBook is a great option for those looking to save time in their business, there are a few alternatives that you can use as well. Here are a few of my favorites.

FreshBooks

FreshBooks is a well-known alternative to HoneyBook.

Here are a few features of FreshBooks: 

  • User-friendly 
  • Invoicing capabilities 
  • Has multiple tiers that can grow with you based on your client or workload 
  • Customizable invoices 
  • Easy to use client portal 
  • Ability to send estimates and proposals 
  • Doesn’t have automated workflows

Hurdlr

Hurdlr is a tool used to organize and track your business income, expenses, and taxes. 

Here are a few of Hurdlr’s features:

  • User-friendly 
  • Monitors income 
  • Tracks mileage 
  • Estimates your taxes
  • Offers a free plan 
  • Doesn’t offer invoicing capabilities like HoneyBook

Quickbooks Self-Employed

Quickbooks Self-Employed is different than the Quickbooks Online that HoneyBook can integrate with. They also have a few features that HoneyBook does not currently offer.  

  • Offers you the option to pay taxes right through their site 
  • Generate profit/loss statements with just a few clicks
  • Has a bill tracking feature for any bills that you owe
  • Is cheaper! 
  • You can easily track expenses 

Wave Accounting 

Wave Accounting is a free software that helps you invoice clients, track expenses, and even get bookkeeping help if you need it.

Here are a few of Wave Accounting’s features:

  • User-friendly 
  • Invoicing capabilities 
  • Expenses tracking 
  • Offers payroll 
  • Offers bookkeeping support 
  • Free to use
  • Client credit card storage

Xero

Xero is a more robust bookkeeping software that helps you invoice clients, track the backend financials of your business, and is great for business owners who need more from bookkeeping software. 

  • Can be used across multiple devices
  • The ability to add payroll via Gusto 
  • Inventory management with built-in software
  • Integrates with project management software  
  • Can get expensive
  • Poor customer support 
  • A learning curve for people not used to bookkeeping systems

HoneyBook Review: Do I Recommend It?  

After my research and testing for my HoneyBook review, I would recommend it. Although it’s on the expensive side and may seem out of reach for those that are just getting started in their business, it does offer flexibility and lots of time-saving automations that you won’t find anywhere else. 

One of the biggest pros to HoneyBook is that everything integrates seamlessly. This frees up time so you can focus on other parts of your business that are the most important, like keeping your clients happy and working on projects.

Plus, HoneyBook does integrate with Quickbooks and other platforms as well, should you need more accounting and bookkeeping options. 

HoneyBook takes out the middle man in a few areas, including having their own time tracker, offering contracts and proposals, and having a built-in client support system. Many systems don’t allow you to integrate these items, so you’re having to supplement them with other tools and resources, some of which cost you more money or more time. 

With HoneyBook, the $40/month may seem steep, but when you think about all of the features you have at your disposal, that adds up quickly in value. And, the time that it can save you when you’re busy is tremendous. 

Why HoneyBook Is A Great Option 

HoneyBook is a great option if you work with multiple clients, have quite a few one-off projects, or if you’re trying to streamline and scale your business. Also, if you’re in the wedding, photography, or even food industries, HoneyBook is instrumental in helping you find others in your realm. 

Still on the fence about HoneyBook? Check them out with a FREE 7-day trial and see if they’re a good fit for you. If not, no harm done. But if so, you can certainly grow with the system.
