September was the best month ever, and not just in terms of how much income I made from my business.
I went on an amazing trip in the middle of the month and came back exhausted, and yet refreshed and excited at the same time. Is that even possible? I’m not sure, but that’s definitely how FinCon left me feeling.
It invigorated my business and my brain. I’ve got lots of new ideas for my business and even some things that I think will help my current clients too.
I also had so much fun meeting everyone in person!
I think FinCon came at the perfect time for me and my business.
And the proof is in the pudding, aka my September income.
My online income for September 2015: $3,372.10
Here is a breakdown of how I earned my money:
VA/Blog Management Services – $2,058.25
Writing – $1,103.85
Advertising on both my sites – $210.00
September was my highest income month yet, even with taking almost a week off to attend FinCon! Plus I’m officially to the point where I’ve earned more than my day job, even after taxes and expenses are taken into account on this figure. Woot!
I also beat my September income goal which was $2,500!
September did see some changes in my client list. I lost two clients and while I am a little bummed about it, I gained some awesome clients too. So there’s that. 🙂
As always, you need to know that I don’t count my online income until the month it gets deposited into my account, so this is from some work at the end of August through about mid-September. I have made some more since then, but it will be included on my next report since it didn’t hit my account until October 1st (or later).
Remember, that my online income has not yet been taxed, which means that about 30% of what I make is going to be taken by Uncle Sam, and another portion of my income will be used for expenses, like internet, computer repairs, tech services, my staff writer, and PayPal fees. Additionally, I’m saving some of my income to be used for FINCON16 and other business expansion projects in the future.
I’m going to set my October income goal at $3,000. This will be my highest income goal yet.
Here are my other online income reports to-date:
- August 2015 – $2,357
- July 2015 – $2,502.60 – Last month as a side hustle!
- June 2015 – $2,130.25
- May 2015 – $1,873.40
- April 2015 – $1,691.51
- March 2015 – $2,131
- February 2015 – $1,534
- January 2015 – $596
- December 2014 – $1,503.50
- November 2014 – $753
- October 2014 – $1,080
- September 2014 – $581
- August 2014 – $280
- July 2014 – $285
For kicks and giggles I decided to average my monthly online income for the 15 months I’ve been freelancing. Even with the smaller months at the very beginning, my average monthly online income (gross) is $1,511.36. My 12 month (gross) average is $1,793.70.
Did you make any online income in September? Is there anything else you’d like to know about how I run my business or make income online? Let me know, I’d love to help you out!

I think you’re doing great – you totally smashed your target! Good luck with your target for October 🙂
Thanks Nicola! I did kill it on this end, now I need to do better with my budget, haha.
Congrats on the income for September! So impressive and you’re doing awesome! 🙂
Thanks Chonce! I’m pretty excited about it!
Hi Kayla,
This is incredible! I looked at your “Hire Me” list and you have so many different types of things you’re working on.
I would be really curious to hear how you started doing freelance writing specifically. I write a lot for my job, but it’s all scientific writing (i.e. journal articles in my specific field), and I write on my blog (for free because it’s fun!), but I would love to be able to do some type of freelance writing in addition to those things. At this point, though, I have no idea how to get started. The only thing I can think of to do is to post an ad on Craigslist, but I bet that’s not the only option out there. 🙂 If you have any tips for first steps to take, I’d love to hear them!
I know a lot of people use job boards, like UpWork or ODesk (I think they might have changed their names though), to get started. I actually started out by sending a few casual cold pitches to most of my clients and emailing successful freelancers to ask them how to get started and if they’d be willing to keep their ears open for jobs for me. It worked well!
Great job, Kayla! I hope things continue to pick up for you!
Thanks Laura! I think they will. 🙂
Wowza! Your hard work is definitely paying off. Thanks for laying everything out there in terms of each month. You can definitely see how much your online work is taking off. Congrats!
Thanks Penny! It’s really started to pick up now, which is great!
Yay Kayla!!! You are killin’ it!!! I am so impressed!!
My freelance income in Sept was $845, which was my lowest month yet. However, I have a few new clients and expect my income to increase again this month. Plus, I have a my HUGE goal of making $10K per month within a year! 🙂 Something tells me you will be hitting the same number in a year!! 🙂
Hope you have a great weekend!! Congrats on the continued success!
I hope so Sarah! I had a couple lower months earlier this year, but since then it’s pretty much been upward progress each month. I can’t wait to see where we both are by this time next year!!
Good for you lady! Hope next month is just as good!
Hey Catherine, I hope so too! 🙂
Way to go! Congrats, that is a huge accomplishment!
Thanks Liz! I’m excited about it. 🙂
Wow, that’s a lot, c ongrats!! It’s really amazing to see how much you were making a year ago versus now. I can’t wait to see how you finish off the year!
Thanks Kristin! I hope I’m on an upward trend. 🙂
