I’m so excited to be able to announce that I’ve completed my first month as a freelancer! I started “negotiations” for my first online writing and VA gigs in the beginning of July and I got started working around the middle part of the month.
So far, so good 🙂 I love writing and getting paid to write and do some other VA tasks as I sit around in my jammies is amazing! Here’s a HUGE shout-out to Michelle and Cat for taking a chance on hiring me for their projects and I hope everything goes up from here.
I’m having a lot of fun and I’ve learned quite a bit by pestering both Cat and Michelle with lots of questions about my specific tasks as well as the nitty-gritty details of freelancing. I’ve also become good friends with Google since I’m constantly Googling things to try to make my work better and solve my own problems before bothering these two busy ladies!
Also, now that I’ve gotten my first couple paying jobs, offers have been rolling in! I think the key to freelancing is to just get started. If you can get someone amazing to take a chance on hiring your newbie-ness you’ll gain experience quickly and more job offers will come your way shortly after.
Selfless promotion: I am looking to pick up a couple more writing or VA gigs so I can hopefully quit my weekend job soon. I know I can make more money by pursuing these freelance jobs than what I’m making at my part-time job and freelancing is something I love doing!
Ok, it’s time for the numbers! In my first “month” (really about 2 weeks is more accurate) of freelancing, I made: $285! Now, it should be noted that this amount is what I was actually paid in July. I did complete some tasks at the tail-end of the month that the money didn’t come through for until after August 1st and this income will be counted in August’s income report. This is also BEFORE taxes, which takes about 1/3 of this money, and expenses, like internet, computer repairs, and Paypal fees.
I’m really hoping to see this number go up and up and up from here on out. As I’ve mentioned, I never knew about the world of online work before starting my blog and this was not something I ever imagined I’d be doing so soon after “dipping my toes” into the blogging world. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t started my blog and worked my tail off to build an audience by guest posting on lots and lots of different sites!
I’m certainly no pro at blogging or at making money online, but if I can get started you can too! If you have any questions about how to get started blogging, freelancing, or about my online income don’t hesitate to contact me! I promise that I will do my best to answer your questions and if I can’t I will point you to someone who can 🙂
My goal for online income for August is $300+. I hope I can make it!
Have you ever thought about freelancing or making money online?

This is awesome, Kayla! I hope to one day break into freelance writing. Like you, it would also be nice to be able to quit my side hustle and work in my PJs!
Yes! I can’t wait to be able to do more of my work from home. Plus, I love writing so it doesn’t really feel like work (most of the time) 🙂
Wonderful! Good job, Kayla! That is really impressive. You’re a little crackerjack, I must say! 😀

Nice work! September will be my first month of really making progress and commiting to some serious freelance efforts, so it’s great to hear others’ experiences! I’m sure you’ll have no trouble making that $300 this month, and looking forward to more posts! 🙂
Thanks B! I sure hope I can make it. August is shaping up to be a-ok in terms of enough freelance jobs to keep me busy, but not over the top. 🙂
